Extraction forceps are used to extract teeth, designed for use in specific areas of the mouth. The beak is shaped to confirm snugly to the contour of the tooth.This makes it easier to reach different teeth effectively. Forcpeps handles are shaped so that a maximum amount of force can be applied to the beaks, while the handles are still in a comfortable position for the oral surgeon.

Direction of use

• The position of the patient, dental chair and operator are critical for successful extraction procedure.
• Force is delivered with the arm and shoulder and not with the wrist movement.
• For a maxillary extraction, the occlusal plane should be about 45- 60 degrees to the floor. The height of the chair should be such that the height of the patient mouth is at or slightly below the operator elbow.
• For the extraction of mandibular teeth, the patient should be positioned in a more upright position so that when the patient open mouth widely, the occlusal plane is parallel to the floor. The chair should be lower than for extraction of maxillary teeth.
• The goal of the forceps use is : expansion of bony socket by use of wedge shaped beaks and removal of tooth from the socket.
• The forceps is applied in five major motions :

– Apical

– Buccal

– Lingual

– Rotation
