Procalcitonin (PCT) is a biomarker that exhibits greater specificity than other proinflammatory markers (eg, cytokines) in identifying patients with sepsis and can be used in the diagnosis of bacterial infections
A procalcitonin test is used to help diagnose sepsis and other bacterial infections, such as meningitis. The test is helpful in diagnosing kidney infections in children with urinary tract infections.
Generally, high PCT levels are found in patients with severe sepsis and septic shock. The elevated as well as highly elevated level of PCT (>2 ng/mL or >10 ng/mL, respectively) is a sign of alarm indicating a high risk of organ dysfunction due to systemic inflammation and calls for immediate treatment of the patient.
The range for procalcitonin in children older than 72 hours and in adults, levels <0.15 ng/mL make a diagnosis of significant bacterial infection unlikely. Procalcitonin (ProCT) between 0.15 and 2.0 ng/mL does not exclude an infection, because localized infections (without systemic signs) may be associated with such low levels.
