Gum Paints can be used to provide relief from inflamed and bleeding gums, cold sores, and mouth ulcers. Tannic acid is applied topically for the treatment of cold sores, diaper rash, fever blisters, and poison ivy. Iodine acts as an anesthetic and anti-infective. Menthol acts as a local analgesic and gives a cooling sensation whereas camphor also acts as a local analgesic. Thymol acts as an analgesic and antiseptic.

Mechanism:
Iodine acts as an antiseptic and anti-infective. Iodine has a powerful bactericidal action, and quickly gets to work killing bacteria and viruses. Tannic acid acts as an astringent for the mucous membrane of the mouth. It forms a film of protein ‘tannate’ that acts as mechanical protective. Menthol acts as a local analgesic and gives the sensation of coolness which gives some relief from the pain. Camphor acts as a mild analgesic. Thymol is a phenolic compound with antiseptic and antibacterial properties.
